Charting new territory
Fresh challenges are something we relish at Toolshed – solving problems to deliver great results, at the best possible price for our clients.
We also love exploring different areas of work, broadening our areas of expertise and cementing new relationships.
A recent project ticked all those boxes, when we were asked to produce a prototype model of a revolutionary new outboard engine in order to allow precision fine-tuning of its ground-breaking design.
Our team previously worked with British engineering company Cox Powertrain to produce a display unit for showcasing a range of their products at exhibitions.
Following the success of that project, they approached us to fabricate a flow test model to enable them to assess the aerodynamics and waterproofing of their new CXO300 – the world’s most powerful diesel outboard engine.
Delivering best value
After establishing the high cost of having the fabrication work carried out by the larger product design model making firms, we took a fresh approach to find a more cost-effective solution.
As an independent company, we can shop around – and that’s just what we did. We have built up a huge network of suppliers and contacts over the last 30 years, allowing us find the best value for any budget.
Thanks to our contacts, we tracked down a freelance model maker who could deliver what was needed. Using the same techniques and materials, they were able to produce a model of the same quality – but at a fraction of the price.
From just a 3D computer model, it was fascinating to see the new flow test model take shape. Made from resin, fibreglass, acrylic and steel, it also featured clear side panels so air and fluid flow could be seen from the outside.
The resulting model will now be rigorously tested to optimise the engine’s design before going into final production.
Cox engineers developed the CXO300 specifically for commercial and government use, to deliver a combination of outstanding power, reliability, durability and fuel efficiency.
So – as well as enjoying a foray into hitherto uncharted waters for us at Toolshed and bringing home the goods at a great price – it’s been quite a thrill to play our small part in the launch of such a game-changing engineering achievement.
